Generating free knowledge in the wikisphere [edit]

In 2015, Patricia Horrillo launched Wikisphere at the center of digital culture Medialab Prado from Madrid. It was born as a working group on Collaborative documentation using semantic wiki technology (Semantic MediaWiki), within the framework of a line of research on citizen journalism.

The objective was to bring this tool closer to people without previous technical knowledge, so that they could document events from a perspective of their own, free and collective.

Parallel to these working sessions, the first ones began to be organized editatones, some meetings to edit on Wikipedia with a particularity: the gender gap was discussed in the free encyclopedia and helped to create gender-responsive content. Marathons were held photographers, of electronic music composers, of programmers... that they became more and more known (and demanded!). These activities have continued since 2021 in Medialab Slaughterhouse, where Wikiesfera continues to function as a working group, with regular editing meetings open to the public.

> Guests and books

From the first editions, in the editatonas organized by Wikiesfera we try to ensure that each session has the participation of a guest speaker expert on the central theme of the activity. This initial intervention allows us to contextualize the field of knowledge in which we are going to work and make visible to women referents who, many times, have been invisible in their respective fields. Listening to a specialist not only enriches the approach with which we approach articles, but also brings inspiration and collective sense to the task of editing Wikipedia from a feminist perspective.

In addition, in recent times We have incorporated a gesture of gratitude to those who participate: give a book related to the theme of the editatona and written by a woman. This small action seeks to recognize the time, commitment and dedication that the participants bring to make more visible the role of women in free knowledge. We believe that editing together is also a form of care and that these meetings, in addition to contributing to reducing the gender gap in Wikipedia, strengthen an active, critical and committed community.

> Collaborations

This stable collaboration has made Medialab in the institution with which we have most editatonas and activities throughout the decade, consolidating a space for feminist learning and action that promotes citizen participation in the construction of free knowledge and the reduction of gaps in Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Movement projects such as Wikidata or Commons. In addition, it has made it possible to weave alliances with other institutions and organizations, with which we have made women from different fields visible and created articles on various topics, thus combating the structural biases that still persist in Wikimedia projects.
