Equity

A truly equitable knowledge must reflect the diversity of human experiences. However, many groups – such as the LGBT community, Roma women and other historically marginalised or underrepresented groups – have been systematically excluded or ignored in knowledge production spaces. At Wikiesfera we work to change this reality: We prioritize their presence on Wikipedia to ensure that anyone, regardless of identity or background, can see themselves reflected. In doing so, we contribute to a more plural encyclopedia and a more just society.

We organize editatonas focused on historically underrepresented collectives, such as the LGBT community, Roma, African, Afro-descendant, Palestinian, Afghan or Dominican women. These collective editing activities seek to expand their representation on Wikipedia and, at the same time, generate safe and collaborative spaces where to reflect on absences, share knowledge and contribute to the construction of a more inclusive, diverse and representative encyclopedia.

In addition, some editors in our community have gone beyond content editing and have written Analytical articles on minority representation on Wikipedia. These texts address different realities and experiences as editors around the equity of knowledge. The goal is to generate a space for reflection both for those who are part of Wikisphere and for anyone interested in questioning biases and absences in free knowledge.
