Women in energy and environment

In September 2024, the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (@mitecogob) of the Government of Spain agreed with Wikiesfera the implementation of a project for the “Development of gender-sensitive environmental and energy content on Wikipedia”. This initiative, for which it seemed fundamental to us the participation of expert organizations in the topics of energy and environment, seeks to focus on the importance of these contents in one of the most important tools of dissemination. The objective of Wikiesfera's involvement in this project is twofold: on the one hand, make visible on Wikipedia relevant women in the fields of energy and the environment and, on the other hand, to train new editors who can in turn train people from their organizations.

From Wikiesfera, we clearly saw that this project and the desire of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge to make visible the biographies of so many women on Wikipedia aligned with our goal of reducing the gender gap in the free encyclopedia. In addition, the importance of involving and training people linked to environmental and energy organizations, a fundamental alliance to create a community of Wikipedians with more diverse knowledge. On the other hand, the Wikimedia Foundation believes that a long-term commitment with sustainability is an essential component of our work towards Wikimedia's mission and vision as well as in the objectives of the Movement Strategy 2030.

For all these reasons, we proposed to carry out a dynamization program to enable the start-up and settlement of a working group to create and improve Wikipedia articles on ecology and energy. In addition, we propose a series of editatonas with a gender perspective and open to citizens, focused on to make women visible and their contributions in these fields, as well as organizations, concepts, publications, documentaries, awards and events related to ecology and energy inWikipedia in Spanish. The objective is that, in these activities, apart from the people of the organizations that receive the training, anyone with an interest in the subject can participate, as well as companions of our community of editors.

For its part, the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge offered to manage the spaces in which to carry out these meetings, such as the the Biodiversity Foundation, where the first editatona was held, in Madrid.
