Chapter in the “Digital Toolkit for Gender Equality”

By Patricia Horrillo

The chapter has been published “How to edit wikipedia with a gender perspective” within the Digital Toolkit for Gender Equality (integrated in the collection "Times / Media Activism" of Social Communication Editions and Publications.), which can be download free of charge at this link. The work brings together experiences on the feminist use of digital technologies, designed for journalists, activists, content creators and workers in the third sector. More than a catalog of tools, it proposes strategies for a subversive and liberating use of technology.

This chapter starts from the training given by Patricia Horrillo during the course “Digital tools for gender equality” of the University of Seville, which took place in October 2025, and explores how to edit Wikipedia from a feminist perspective, knowing that despite its open and collaborative vocation, the encyclopedia reproduces inequalities in who builds knowledge and what content is considered relevant. In the face of this, the edition is proposed as a transformative practice and includes a basic guide to get started, highlighting its collective and continuous dimension.

As a reference of this approach, Wikisphere is presented: a Feminist learning model that promotes the participation of women in the construction of free knowledge from collaborative and care-based spaces. Editing Wikipedia, the chapter concludes, is a form of political intervention to build a more just, diverse and plural memory.
