Session 11: University projects experiencing collaborative development

In the last session of the working group we had the opportunity to speak with Carmen Haro (@unfolded), journalist, researcher and lecturer at the University of Valladolid (@UVa). This year, Carmen taught "Participatory Journalism on the Net" with third year students of Journalism, and wanted to give a return to the approach of the optional subject.

What Carmen did was involve the 40 students of the class in the process of development of the subject. He first asked them to think about a project individually based on the parameters used in the open calls for proposals. Medialab-Prado (@medialabprado): what they wanted to do, how they were going to do it and what profile of collaborators they would need; and then he was introduced in five minutes to the rest of his teammates.

Once the projects have been submitted and through a participatory dynamics, left deciding jointly which were the most viable and the most interesting initiatives. The objective was to "open" that proposal so that the authorship disappeared, so that the comrades who came together did so out of interest and not only out of friendship. Finally, the students were grouped around six projects, They were the ones who set out.

But Carmen also wanted to add an element related to Wikipedia to each project. He met at Medialab with Patricia Horrillo (@PatriHorrillo) and talked about the possibilities that could be in each proposal. Thus, the students not only approached a creative work linked to communication but they had to register certain information on Wikipedia pages (existing but with little content or directly new) related to the theme of their project.

> Projects and their contributions to Wikipedia

>> 1. Surviving the kitchen (@survivecocin)

This group created a cooking channel on YouTube It explained easy recipes for students. They did a great job on social media, with interviews and taking people to cook.

Your contribution to Wikipedia was the creation of three entries that did not exist on cook biographies:

>> 2. Strategy in RRSS for UVa Radio (@Radio_UVa)

The radio of the University of Valladolid, UVa Radio, is newly created and this group developed a communication strategy in social networks to make it known and disseminate its programming.

Your contribution to Wikipedia was to improve the entry of "University radio", which already existed but was very poor.

>> 3. Stereotyped (@Stereotyped)

The aim of this group was to break certain social and cultural stereotypes. To do this, they created a website in which they were uploading videos of interviews to different groups, and even to the same members, where they showed some prejudices that we all have.

Your contribution to Wikipedia was included in the entry of Stereotype as regards media, with the following paragraphs:

  • Definition and evolution of its meaning
  • Stereotypes in children's literature
  • Stereotypes in the media
  • Stereotypes in advertising
  • Stereotypes in cinema
  • Recommendations for the elimination of stereotypes

>> 4. Map - Mundi@infoMAPAMUNDI)

This group launched a radio program on international politics and shared the audios on a Channel on the platform ivoox (@ivoox).

Your contribution to Wikipedia was to create the entry Podcasting that did not exist in Spanish.

>> 5. Microsapiens@microsapiens)

They developed a daily blog of scientific dissemination through data visualization and infographics to facilitate the understanding of certain things.

Your contribution to Wikipedia was to create the entry ‘Data display’ that didn't exist.

>> 6. Cracked (@Achistados)

The latter group decided to make a humor channel on YouTube, and although the project itself was a success, on the wiki side they had problems and were unable to create the content they wanted.

They wanted to contribute on Wikipedia the Entrance YouTuber but they deleted it after uploading it due to the non-existence of the term (it also does not exist in the English version, despite the widespread use of the term).

Despite the frustration caused by this situation, they decided to try to create a section within the same YouTube post. However, that entry cannot be edited, so left a comment on the talk page asking for help to perform the practice. Someone from WikiMedia Spain from Valladolid contacted them and they may be able to carry out the creation of that entry (we will be attentive).

Continuing the spirit of their project, they made a humorous video to explain "their failure to contribute to free culture" ⁇
