Last Tuesday, April 7th I attended during the morning the editathon #Lingwiki organised by Manuel Alcántara (@inicios) at the Autonomous University of Madrid, where he teaches ‘Language Technologies’ in the degree ‘Modern Languages, Culture and Communication’. Manuel told me that in his subject they analyze the changes that are taking place in communication as a result of new technologies, and taking it to the practical field a student proposed to make an editathon focused on linguistics, similar to one they do in America.
So they organized an open call and focused it on the low representation that women who have dedicated themselves to linguistics have in Wikipedia. It was very interesting to see so many people participate in this initiative and I could corroborate that even the experts in these areas of language (teachers in certain highly specialised subjects), They also doubted their legitimacy to edit on Wikipedia., which I discussed with the working group.

If to the complex task of creating an article or modifying something from an existing one, you add the difficulty of having to learn a Label Language, the leap that must be made to become an editor is much greater. And there are many people who give up even trying. In the editathon last March we discussed one of the great advances of Wikipedia at incorporate a visual editor that allows us to handle an article as if it were a text document.
For those of us who learned how to edit with wikitext, it may be strange to contemplate the article in its reading form to retouch something, but for people who are new to the wiki world is a great help and invites you to try. Although this seems obvious and although for the editors of the English Wikipedia this editor is activated by default, in Spanish Wikipedia you have to enter your personal configuration and activate it in the "Features in tests" panel.
