{"id":3025,"date":"2016-12-19T20:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-12-19T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=3025"},"modified":"2025-07-13T10:25:31","modified_gmt":"2025-07-13T10:25:31","slug":"seguimos-saliendo-de-la-costilla-de-adan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wikiesfera.org\/en\/2016\/12\/19\/seguimos-saliendo-de-la-costilla-de-adan\/","title":{"rendered":"We keep coming out of Adam's rib"},"content":{"rendered":"<pre>Article initially published in&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tribunafeminista.org\/2016\/12\/seguimos-saliendo-de-la-costilla-de-adan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Feminist Tribune<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TFeminista_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@TFeminista_<\/a>)<\/pre>\n\n\n<p>In recent months, I have followed several cases of books written by women in which, to give meaning to the relevance of that narrative, the publisher has decided (with or without the author's consent) to include a strip of paper in which it is highlighted who she is or was in relation to certain men, relevant by themselves, of course.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of them I discovered in November when I read a news story about the posthumous publication of a book on Republican politics. <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercedes_N%C3%BA%C3%B1ez_Targa\">Mercedes Nunez<\/a> (1911-1986) entitled <em>The value of memory<\/em>. It was put on sale by Editorial Renacimiento with the following claim: \u2018Memories of the <strong>Secretary of State<\/strong> Pablo Neruda, testimony to the horror of Francoist prisons and Nazi concentration camps. It seems that we only achieve a certain value as women if a man \"verifies\" us and I pointed it out to the editors on Twitter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">Better this one? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/osSkBPQl5j\">pic.twitter.com\/osSkBPQl5j<\/a><\/p>\u2014 Editorial Renacimiento (@RENACIMIENTOED) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RENACIMIENTOED\/status\/800057494227849216?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 19, 2016<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">because of that nobody heeded him and we were left with almost all the unsold print run, but we believe in Mercedes and here we are!<\/p>\u2014 Editorial Renacimiento (@RENACIMIENTOED) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RENACIMIENTOED\/status\/800063512982786048?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 19, 2016<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, beyond criticizing a small publisher that wants to rescue writings of invisible women, I would like to reflect on how we continue to be influenced by who prescribes, especially if that someone is a man. And of course I think you can use the name of a famous man for promotional purposes, but in another way more respectful towards the author, for example, taking care of the language: it's not the same <strong>be the secretary of<\/strong> someone (involves possession) who <strong>work as a secretary for<\/strong> Someone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the explanation they gave me saddened me, because just as I think they have a responsibility, so do we. Although it is hard to accept, if we do not buy books written by women unless they are linked to a man of weight, it is we who are not legitimizing these authors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another of these cases that has circulated on social networks is that of a book by the Mexican writer <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elena_Garro\">Elena Garro<\/a> (1916-1998), <em>Reunion of characters<\/em>, in which the promotional text reads: \u2018<strong>Woman of<\/strong> Octavio Paz, <strong>Lover of<\/strong> Bioy Casares, <strong>Inspirational<\/strong> Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez <strong>admired by<\/strong> Borges\u201d. No comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">The worst belt in the history of Mexican and universal literature. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Zkkz9yZ9Vl\">pic.twitter.com\/Zkkz9yZ9Vl<\/a><\/p>\u2014 Juan Pablo Villalobos (@VillalobosJPe) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VillalobosJPe\/status\/804285863966502912?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 1, 2016<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When I began to be aware of Wikipedia's gender gap, it helped me a lot to identify certain features of that inequality in the experience of my colleagues, who had been editing longer and more intensely than I had. They showed me how most women are systematically described based on their family or emotional ties to certain men. <strong>It is sadly common to find at the beginning of women's biographies those \"mother of\", \"daughter of\", \"wife of\", \"muse of\" ... as a relevant feature, even before their professional dedication or their contributions in any area.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This fact of describing women in relation to men occurs not only in Wikipedia biographies but also in other articles I have recently discovered that have reminded me of this chapter of the Bible:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<p><strong>Genesis 2:22&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bibliaparalela.com\/lbla\/genesis\/2.htm\"><em>Women's training<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he fell asleep; And God took one of his ribs, and shut up the flesh in that place. And out of the rib which the LORD God had taken from the man, he formed a woman, and brought her to the man.<br>And the man said: This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; She will be called a woman, because of the man she was taken.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Do I seem to exaggerate? Take a look at how the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Var%C3%B3n\">\u2018man\u2019<\/a> and to the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mujer\">\u2018woman\u2019<\/a> in their respective Wikipedia articles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p><strong>Male<\/strong> is a male human being, regardless of whether it is <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ni%C3%B1o\">child<\/a> o <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adulto\">adult<\/a>. The word \"male\" in Spanish derives from the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lat%C3%ADn\">Latin<\/a> <em>varo<\/em> (\"brave\", \"efforted\"), most likely related to <em>vir<\/em> (\"male\", \"hero\") under the influence of the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lenguas_germ%C3%A1nicas\">Germanic<\/a> <em>baro<\/em> (\"free man\").<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p><strong>Female<\/strong> (from <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lat%C3%ADn\">Latin<\/a> <em>mul\u012der<\/em>, <em>-\u0113ris<\/em>), o <strong>female<\/strong> (lat. <em>fem\u012dna<\/em>), is the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Homo_sapiens\">human being<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Femenino\">feminine<\/a> o <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hembra\">female<\/a>, regardless of whether it is <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ni%C3%B1a\">girl<\/a> o <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adulta\">adult<\/a>. Woman also refers to distinctions of <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/G%C3%A9nero_(sociolog%C3%ADa)\">gender<\/a> character <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cultural\">cultural<\/a> y <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social\">social<\/a> attributed to him, as well as to the differences <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sexualidad\">sexual<\/a> y <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biolog%C3%ADa\">biological<\/a> of the female in the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Especie_humana\">human species<\/a> in front of the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Macho\">male<\/a> of the human species. It has physical aspects that differentiate it from the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Var%C3%B3n\">male<\/a> as a higher voice, narrower waist, wider hip and <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pelvis\">pelvis<\/a> wider, less <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vello_corporal\">body hair<\/a>, minus <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Masa_muscular\">muscle mass<\/a> and more <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tejido_adiposo\">adipose tissue<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mamas\">Mamas<\/a> Larger and narrower and smaller <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Estatura\">stature<\/a> compared to the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Var%C3%B3n\">male<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We still have a very long road ahead of us and we need a lot of work in quantity and quality. <strong>Not only is it about making many new biographies of women but it is essential to make them with a gender perspective<\/strong>. Although it is not easy, I am also convinced that being aware of these inequalities puts us a little closer to starting to change things.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We need to unlearn first to perceive the relevance of women in relation to the men who accredit us, and <strong>learn later to value and legitimize each other<\/strong>. There is nothing more enriching than discovering and admiring you for what you bring me, teach me, motivate me and accompany me in this vital process. Therefore, I will write about you and your lives.
