The second session of the <strong>CYCLE I | <em>They were always there: Pioneers of illustration and comics<\/em><\/strong> , driven by <strong>Elisa McCausland<\/strong> y <strong>Diego Salgado<\/strong>, It revolved around how enlightenment was a decisive political tool in the construction of modern public opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"gt-escucha-la-sesion\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>&gt; Listen to the session<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>We will record all the dissemination sessions of this project that we will organize in several bookstores in Madrid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, you can follow <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/go.ivoox.com\/sq\/3114613\">our IVOOX Channel<\/a><\/strong> so you don't miss any.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.ivoox.com\/player_ej_169147893_6_1.html?c1=741c83\" width=\"100%\" height=\"200\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" scrolling=\"no\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"gt-resumen\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>&gt; Summary<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Elisa McCausland and Diego Salgado showed how <strong>Enlightenment was a decisive political tool in building modern public opinion and shaping new female identities.<\/strong>. In a context like the American one, with an expanding press (symbolized by the birth of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_New_York_Times\">The New York Times<\/a><\/em>), the vignettes allowed to intervene in public debates directly, quickly and visually. The image was not an ornament: It was a political weapon. The <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Procesi%C3%B3n_del_Sufragio_Femenino\"><strong>1913 Suffragette March<\/strong><\/a>, perfectly staged and capable of overshadowing the presidential investiture, <strong>to what extent image, politics and spectacle could be intertwined<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The construction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nueva_Mujer\"><em>New Woman<\/em><\/a>, disseminated by illustrators as <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Dana_Gibson\">Charles Dana Gibson<\/a>, It was re-appropriated by cartoonists who shifted the focus from passive beauty to action and public presence. The figure of <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amelia_Bloomer\">Amelia Bloomer<\/a> and the popularization of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bombacha\">bloomer\u2019s<\/a><\/em> (bottled trousers) showed that <strong>the illustration didn't just show new clothes<\/strong> (allowing to ride a bicycle)<strong>, but new possibilities of autonomy and security for women<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Illustrators as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lou_Rogers\">Lou Rogers<\/a> (article in English), <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nina_E._Allender\">Nina Allender<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nell_Brinkley\">Nell Brinkley<\/a> o <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rose_O%27Neill\">Rose O\u2019Neill<\/a> They combined aesthetics and activism. <strong>Economic independence, intellectual property awareness and the use of <em>merchandising<\/em> They appeared already then as forms of emancipation.<\/strong> An analysis was also made of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mujer_Maravilla\">Wonder Woman<\/a> <\/strong>as a link between feminist waves. The character, created by the Marston clan (<a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Moulton_Marston\">William Moulton Marston<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elizabeth_Holloway_Marston\">Elizabeth Holloway<\/a> y <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olive_Byrne\">Olive Byrne<\/a>) and drawn by <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/H._G._Peter\">H. G. Peter<\/a>, linked <strong>the strong anatomy, the athletic gesture and the feminist epic with previous imaginaries of goddesses, Amazons and feminist patriotism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dialogue was completed with the Spanish context and the intervention of <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alicia_Palmer\">Alicia Palmer<\/a>, screenwriter of <em>One woman, one vote<\/em>, who <strong>shared his research process in newspaper libraries and parliamentary proceedings to rebuild the struggle for the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sufragio_femenino_en_Espa%C3%B1a\">women's suffrage in Spain<\/a><\/strong>. Figures as <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clara_Campoamor\">Clara Campoamor<\/a> o <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benita_Asas\">Benita Asas<\/a> They appeared as part of an underexplored international network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the session <strong>was seen the presence or absence of certain figures in Wikipedia<\/strong>. The following was pointed out: <strong>asymmetry between the English version<\/strong>, with further development on suffragettes and illustrators, <strong>and Spanish<\/strong>, where many items are minimal or non-existent. Even the article on the <em>bloomers<\/em> It lacks the political context that does appear in English.
